That's from Hells Angels, Thompson's memoir of the year he spent riding with the infamous biker gang. It was Thompson's first book, and IMO, his best. (Although Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas comes awful close.) I loaned those two to a friend of mine in college, and never got them back.
In the originl context, Thompson is writing of going off the road on a motorcycle. He had not quite reached the edge in his own life yet, though he was learning fast about what was on the other side of the line.
